The tiny frozen island of fish people, so critical to trade despite their size, with a fondness for violence.
The longest lasting established land, those of Mish Isle do not consider themselves to be a kingdom nor continent, only their people. While their land is rather small, they are one of the most important tradeports in the world, opening their ports to any, including those wanted for crimes. Despite the freezing temperatures some people choose to live under the water rather than on land, for those that don't, due to most of their residents having to be often submerged in water, every permanent structure has been installed with heated water pools. Their temperatures rarely raise above 25 degrees Fahrenheit, though the densely packed trees around their homes help to shield them mostly from any snow and sleet that makes up their most common weather patterns.
Mish Isle was officially established in 102 BD, though people had lived on the island for a long time before then, for a few years having no formal way of leadership, but the most prominent family on the island declared themselves as rulers in 83 BD. It didn’t receive positive feedback, but they managed to remain in power for a couple of hundred years, during which, despite the discourse and arguments about them remaining the leaders of the town, they made big pushes to become a main part of tradelines and increase the general quality of life for their people. Finally, in 117 AP, the ruling family was brought down, and the current system of fighting for leaders to be chosen, though it caused there to be a temporary increase in murder and injuries being dealt outside of the competition period, eventually died down. Since things have settled down, their economic power has only continued to grow due to their importance in traderouts, only allowing some exceptions to guild members about their restrictions on outsiders staying in the country. Recent higher temperatures have begun to cause issues in their fishing resources, and have begun to raise the water levels on their shores, causing some concern and tensions to rise, but it has yet to cause any sort of violence.
Mish is a tiny island, with only a rough area of 5 square miles and a population of about 1.5k, though their numbers rarely rise or lower due to there tending to be a constant flow of how many people die and are born each year; however, this doesn't prove to be true with there being temporary population jumps every three years between the Crowning of the Champion, though the number of deaths during the competition levels things back out. Most of the people on the island call the small town home, though some refuse to or can't leave the water for long, with them choosing instead to make makeshift homes under the freezing waters, and even the ones who live within town often coming and going throughout the year, the town most packed during times there are trade ships in port. Their people are composed fully on Locathah, Kuo-top, Sahuagin, and Merfolk, with very little exceptions due to their intolerance to outsiders remaining there for long periods. Very few of their people are particularly religious, but those who are tend to lean towards worshiping the War or Tempest domains, the former by those planning on fighting in future crownings and the latter by the more general few, in hopes of having good trades come in on ships.
Rulership is determined by a tournament that takes place every three years, where there’s a competition that’s a combination of fighting and displaying other skills. Ultimately, the top few competitors competing in a hand-to-hand fight often resulting in death, with the ultimate winner being the ruler till the next tournament or their death, whichever comes first.
The current leader is Halu Elo.
The Second Place Survivor is Laaguuma.
Halu Elo is brutal and dangerous, not hesitating to strike out against anyone who speaks out against any of his decisions, though it is known that if one manages to catch them on a good day they may be able to subtly sway him into changing his mind. Laaguuma is said to be a fool and young, with most being confused as to how they had managed to become the second place survivor, though they are quick witted and brutal when they need to be, showing some caution needs to be taken with them.
Mish is heavily impacted and involved in the trade routes of most kingdoms, being a major stopping point for those attempting to trade with continents that aren’t their direct neighbors, leading them to be both reliant on the business that trade brings but also cooperation from them being critical in many other countries survival. Their people are more than happy to survive purely on what their icy wonderland can provide to them, which is mostly fish, as well as some other rarer minerals and oils that can be found under the frozen water. Deeper in the waters, though there are many who refuse to face the risk of doing so and encountering deadly creatures, there are even large amounts of metals. Most of their monetary profit comes from being the only source of supplies for the ships that have to dock there temporarily while sailing, which allows them to often squeeze more money from the traveling people than needed, though they much prefer taking food and other goods in exchange of those fees. On the island itself, coin isn't used much when exchanging with each other, as they tend to prefer trading goods and services, with the only use of coin being to buy from the ships when they pass through. Such payments and opportunities to buy from ships are come and go, due to few being allowed to stay on the island for more than a month.
