Seltortis

A continent of many, filled with passive-aggressiveness, nations divided by more than just the desert spreading between their lands.

About

Regions

Seltortis is composed of the upper kingdom of the upper kingdom of Oento and the lower kingdom of Nazae. Oento contains a total of three cities, Onryx, Airdale, and Sherfield and have been ruled by a royal family since the beginning of its existence. Their northern lands are icy and mostly frozen, their middle grounds more simply forests and fields with a mountain range across the center of it, and their lower territory fading into a desert biome. There are rumors that there are a group living within those mountains, but not a lot is known about them. Its temperatures vary throughout the country, with the lower regions outside the desert typically varying between 40 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, while the upper regions often hit below their 30s, with mild weather patterns. Nazae only has two cities currently, Co'ombe and Eldham, settled on the Eastern and Western edges of their lands. A great portion of their territory is the desert lands, and much of the unsettled lands outside of that are marshy and swampy, making traveling and building within them difficult and even sometimes dangerous. Its temperatures are usually higher with it very rarely dropping below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and often has rain, especially in their swampy portions, with the exception of most of the desert region.

History

The early history of life on Seltortis had all people together in one civilization, though the time of the said civilization has been lost to time with debate to what it really was. It is unclear when it was realized that there was no way the civilization could live with peace with a desert basically separating them into two, eventually causing them to be divided into the countries that would eventually be known as Oento and Nazae, the latter initially known as Eplea before 203 AP. There had always been a passive aggressiveness between Oento and Nazae due to bitterness from many of Oento’s citizens due to many of them having believed those living in Nazae would have never had economic success, given that the reason so much land was given so easily to those below the desert due to the belief that it would be useless. These tensions only rose even more after certain people native to Oento migrated to Nazae after some hostilities among the people, specifically halflings and harengon, the former in which used to play a major role in those of the mountain.

The People

Seltortis is one of the largest continents, both population and land size-wise, with the population of the continent being an estimated 85,000 people, and being approximately 950 square miles in size. Despite that, it's likely that they have the lowest percentage of their people who actually choose to stay in town, many of their kind choosing a more traveling and roaming lifestyle instead of settling down, with it being slightly more common in the north thanks to safer traveling environments. The races that are native, and are still the most prominent, to these lands are the following: Earth Genasi, Dwarf, Deep Gnome, Duergar, Tabaxi, Shifter, Satyr, Centaur, Lizardfolk, Grung, Human, Verdan, Halfling, and Harengon. Many of the people in Seltortis favor having larger families, much more prominent in those who have settled down in towns but also not unhead of even in those who life a wandering lifestyle. Although there is still some passive agression between the upper and lower continent, things have calmed down enough that most people feel comfortable enough around each other, though those from families who left the north often are treated at least a bit coldly if they travel to Oento, even if it wasn't them directly. While religion isn't the most prominent, with the most common sort of worship and magic sourcing from nature rather than the divine, the most commonly worshipped are the Nature and Life domains.

Oento

Ruling Parties

Oento has a royal family that acts as the ruling party, with the majority of them consisting of Tabaxi, though rumor is there is a group within the mountains that consider themselves an independent party.

Hierarchy

Co-regent King Austere Edge (Austere) and Queen Serene Wish (Serene)

The Co-regents are known to help balance each other out, with King Austere's harsher ways becoming much more mild after marrying his wife, likely due to her growing up in a much more modest life and being known for being a loving and supporting partner.

First Born Prince Jade Flower (Jade)

Second Born Princess Fallen Twig (Twig)

Third Born Prince Magic Piece (Piece)

The siblings have very diverse personalities and behaviors, with Jade typically being the most well liked due to how often they go out and interact with the people. Twig is said to be much more serious in her political roles and some even say she feels a bit distance; Pierce is even worse, with many of the people rarely even seeing him with them spending so much time outside of towns and in the wilderness.

Their land is broken down into three different duchies, the North, Middle, and Border, with dukes and duchesses chosen to be in charge of each.

Duke of the North Silent Feather (Silent), Duchess of the Middle Agile Trick (Trick), Duke of the Border Thorn

It was already known that Silent would take over the North due to the position having been held in his family for generations, though not much is known about him other than that due to him rarely coming to town. Trick hold familial ties to the royal family and is described as elegant and polite, earning her the appreciation and approval of the people that ultimately earned her the title of duchess. Thorn is the only duke who currently and has ever earned the position without any sort of familial connection to the royal family, having shown his loyalty and owned approval through work as a guard in Sherfield.

Economy

Those of Oento tend to rely heavily on fishing or artisan crafts to make money. The northern town rely mostly on the fish they are able to get on their fishing ports, though some dare to go under the water to seek out oils and minerals. Those of the mountain and the nearby town are known for their crafts with metals and stone, most prominently things not used for war such as simple travel gear and arts. The people that dare to live closer to the desert often take trips to it to collect large amounts of sand to return back to town to make glass pieces, often option to sell or trade them as glass panes rather than crafted fully.  During warmer weather, the people in colder regions tend to surge in the materials and supplies that they are able to each due to short periods in which the ice is easier to break through or even melts on its own, while colder seasons is when those who traverse the desert for its  supplies benefit the most. There is a bit of a wealth disparity between the royal family and other higher classes when compared to the common person, however there are many instances throughout the year in which they offer some means of repayment, such as greatly helping funding during the Night of the Freed.

Cities

Onryx

A semi-frozen town that is a majorly fishing town, though they are also known to be heavy in weaving and warm clothing making due to their temperatures. Although not as major, many are often skilled in ice carving, which also carries over to how they decorate their houses and buildings. A part of their town is on a separate island portion, though trips back to the mainland happen fairly often. Unusually, they seem to always know when to be prepared for bad weather and the best way to prepare their structures and protect their cattle from any possible issues from it.

Airdale

A mining town where many of their structures are a hybrid of wood and stone, as well as a lot of bright and shiny decorations. Most of the town is built underground in a mostly man-made cave, and, though there are structures outside, they aren’t as well cared for. The people within tend to take up jobs that take full advantage of the stones and resources around them, with mining and crafting from gathered resources being a popular soruce of income. Despite this, there are a few people who still leave the town to hunt, gather, and do other things to make a living, especially with recent concerns about stability because the earthquakes.

Sherfield

A simple small port town where a lot of refugees stay, causing there to be a lot of temporary structures put up and taken down often, leaving the ground near the town well-worn, though they also have a large agricultural portion of their town. Many of the people there are ones non-native to the lands, taking full advantage of the sea the town rests against, those with an afinity for the water able to find plenty of resources within it. For those who prefer to stay focused on things on land, in recent years interest has been growing on the use of the sands and anything else that may be found in the nearby desert.

Goldcrest (Abandoned in 125 AP)

A once grand town that held the royal families for many years but was abandoned after a long period of morning after what was considered to be the most successful co-regents passing. Over the 200 years since, some groups have taken temporary refuge there, but have since deteriorated, the only structure properly standing being the abandoned castle.

Nazae

Ruling Parties

Nazae works with a council as their main government, ensuring to have one representative of each race prominent of their lands to ensure equality. The council is elected by the current members whenever one steps down or is otherwise removed from their positions. Current council members:

Azoqiss - Lizardfolk Representative

g’Iph’n’Iph - Grung Representative

Nira Buzold - Human Representative

Drosh - Verdan Representative

Sylda Nightgrove - Halfling Representative

Pajeon - Harengon Representative

Azoqiss' position in the council was only earned by a situation where he was in the right place at the right time, causing some to feel it may have been a set up, but few rarely voice those concerns due to his physical strength. g'Iph' n'Iph is the most mysterious on the council, having spent very little time within civilization before earning friendships within the towns, most people certain that he doesn't even fully understand what his position means for him. Nira is easily the most well liked of the council due to her always seeming to know the right thing to say and when, rarely ever getting on the bad side of anyone. There are mixed feelings about Drush's position on the council, some feelings that he was chosen because he was truly neutral in most issues that arose, while most believe he only earned it because of family relations to past members. Sylda's family always had a close role with the council however, unlike Drush, it was well known and expected for her to gain the position next, with slightly less malice towards such favoritism of the position. Pajeon has always had close connections to the people, typically playing a major role in keeping morale high and being well liked by many.

Economy

Nazae is known for its agricultural exports, specifically crops similar to what would be found in damper environments close to the equator such as citruses and other tropical fruits. Co’ombe is heavier on trade than Eldham, due to having most their structures directly on water and having a shorter travel time to other continents, though the limited areas of farms regions do allow for them to have some sort of self sustenance during slower seasons. There aren't major things found in their region apart from what they grow on their farms, which are typically planted and managed by individual people. Eldham is much more swampy with crops growing spread throughout the town, with the most prominent being apples, mango, and rice, though their people often travel further inland to harvest citruses. There are very few people who live more wealthy or extravagant lives other than those whose families have gained their wealth through years of hard work, and even those who are  usually choose to live more modest lives. Profits benefit for both cities during their colder seasons, which tends to be the very end and the very beginning of the year, given that tends to be when the crops they gather are at peak harvesting time, as well as when the most traderships pass through Co'ombe.

Cities

Co’ombe

A small port town with a low population, with little to no children and families living among their people. The housing portion of the town is separate from the business one, with a mix of above-ground and more burrow-like buildings made there, with most of them being newer structures made within the past decade or so. The lizardfolk, grung, and halfling representatives call this city their home. Many people in the town are focused on making money and their work, reflecting the minimum amount of families around, with there often even being days that people would brush off even simple small talk in order to focus more on an incoming shipment.

Eldham

A very swampy town where the houses have to have a wooden pathway going between them or else they’d sink into the marshy grounds around them. The land around without buildings built on it tends to be covered in crops, as well as carefully marked pathways to show where it is safe to walk. Notably, the representatives for humans, verdan, and harengon take residency. There have recently been an unusual increase of people in the city who prefer to focus on the knowledge that can be gained from the area rather than ones who want to fight any threats around, as people one came to the city to do.
