Varis

The divided continent with people of the sky and the sea who just can't seem to make peace with each other.

About

Regions

Varis is broken up into two vastly different countries; Neptaron and Aerathis. Aerathis is broken down into two towns, Skycrest and Zephyr's Reach, with its lands being floated islands often separated with wide gaps of air, causing traversing between them without any means of flight to be rather treacherous. Their land is mostly grassy middles fading to rocky edges, though the largest of the island is outlined by rocky mountains around it. Their temperatures are typically rather cool, with its northern islands often getting snow during their colder seasons, though the area of their lower continent typically stays around a more comfortable temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The lower continent of Neptaron only has only one town, Waveholm, with their territory being mostly composed of partially sunken lands with portions that are raised above the water. They have just as many structures under the water as they do above water, possibly even more so, limiting what those who can't stay under water for long periods are able to do. Their temperatures are typically rather mild, typically staying between 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with rain being often and an unfortunate season where hurricanes are rather prominent.

History

The feud that has been going on between Aerathis and Neptaron for hundreds of years, even before their modern kingdoms came into existence, though the war officially being declared is much more recent. There’s rumors that it is nearing near the thousand year mark since the feud began, though many believe it’s been longer, perhaps even since the islands were torn apart into the two groups that exist now. Tensions only increased between the two when the earthquakes began, causing destruction even to the floating islands and killing many of the few crops that they had. The first of the two modern kingdoms to be established was Aerathis, with it officially being established around 236 years ago, though it didn’t start using a council system till forty years after its establishment. Nepataron was established approximately 226 years ago, with a fully established council, which many believe Aerathis took heavy inspiration for their own council for. Nepataron took a hard hit when the earthquakes began to worsen, causing more of their above ground land to fall under the water and many of their structures to crumble. It was during these few moments of weakness that Aerathis took the bold jump to take claim of the last of the floating islands that they didn’t own, the lowest of them all, leaving the lowest kingdom to only being composed of the sunken lands. There was a very brief period of peace between the two kingdoms during the most recent major earthquake, but that was quickly dissolved after less than two tendays.

The People

Due to its unusual nature, it's rather difficult to get a proper number of the size of their lands or their general population numbers, but rough estimates can be made of it being between 750 and 800 square miles. It is even more difficult to find an estimation for the population, with the general consensus being that the population is between 35k and 40k people, made even harder that so many people, expecially those in Neptaron, choose to live in areas outside of the main towns. This number is also constantly changing due to the fact that the two countries are at war, and it is nearly impossible to keep a proper count of the number of lives that are lost on each side, as well as how many people have gone into hiding to avoid getting involved in the fighting. The races that are native to these lands are the following: Aarakocra, Aasimar, Air Genasi, Fairy, Owlin, Kenku, Kobold, Grung, Sea Elf, Tortle, Triton, Water Genasi, and Yuan-ti. Despite the ongoing war that leads to many deaths, or perhaps because of, there is a large amount of people on this continent that consider themselves to be rather religious, with the Tempest domain being the most common that people give offerings to, though possibly tied for seconds are the Order and War domains.

Aerathis

Ruling Parties

Aerathis is ruled by a council called the Council of the Winds,  whose members serve a five year term and are elected by the people, keeping a strict number of one per race that primarily lives in the floating islands.

Current Members

High Chancellor Therion Head of the Council

Whisperwing Lysandra Head of Environment and Agriculture

Skywarden Aelar Head of defense and security. Captain of the Skyguard

Starweaver Flit Head of Culture and Education

Featherlord Korin Head of Trade and Commerce

Therion, while still rather young compared to others on the council, has gone through his fair share of issues and challenges that he had to deal with, proving his resourcefulness and athorative power even in a time of war. Lysandra proved her worth to the people by beginning to study how to increase their crops and resources even from her childhood, bringing few people to doubt how much effort she's willing to put into helping their people. Aelar first grew in power by becoming the Skyguard Captain, so there was high support to them even before they earned a position on the council, such support never lessening. Opinions on Flit are mixed, some thinking that he is too friendly for a position on the council, but has gained a surge of supporters in the less common races of the nation. Korin has been on the council for longer than many of the other council members have lived, and despite his well known cranky attidue at times, he rarely receives and criticism about his choices.

Economy

Aerathis’ main exports focus on what they are able to gather and make from the limited resources they can get on their smaller amount of lands, with the most prominent resource available being rare herbs that seem to only grow on their lands due to the atmospheric influences. They have a major exportation of lightweight craftmanship as well, though getting the supplies to make such crafts are reliant on what they can import through their rather limited amount of trade. Due to it being a time of war and their main means of reaching the people below being blocked off by enemies, what can be brought into their people are mostly limited to what can be snuck up through flying creatures or an occasional airship flight, though they limit the latter to only dire situations. On the limited amount of farmland that they have, the crops that they are able to grow tend to be rather basic and plain, typically just potatoes and other root vegetables, leading to food being another major important to them. Despite so many mountains available, none are willing to gather the resources from them, leading metals to be an important import as well. There is a clear wealth division, which is typically shown by which town or region one stays in, with the cost of staying in the much more elegant Zephyr's Reach seems to be much higher than in Skycrest.

Cities

Zephyr’s Reach

The city where most of the people with permanent wings reside due to it being inaccessible without some form of flight. They care a lot about their architecture and try to make it as elegant and nature-related as they can, giving thanks and praise to the world for granting them their abilities in their designs when they can. On the edge of the island is a large grand tree where there are many weaved nests acting as simple houses, with a rough pathway up the tree branches to grant access for those without the ability to fly or too young to do so. Most of the council members live in this town, making it a popular one to live in.

Skycrest

The town that gets the most visitors of the non-winged sort, their structures are more land-dweller friendly. Most of their structures are made of stones, though tend to be rather old in style and stability, with many parts being patched up by weavings and wood. It’s a smaller town, and kept secure against any threats, using the mountains as protection as the buildings circle the water and a close watch being kept on any known routes to the lower island for any threats to the people. Their people are a mix of shopkeepers as well as having the highest population of Skywardens living in it, though this is just a number as many of them tend to go in and out of town often.

Neptaron

Ruling Parties

The Tide Council is the ruling party of Neptaron, though it is headed by the King, who is also the one who selects them. They serve in terms of seven years, after in which the people get to vote if they get to remain in office or not (excluding the King’s position).

Hierarchy

King Davnas

Davnas, despite initial doubts about how confident he would be in the position, has grown into a man more loyal to his country than anything else in the world, has shown his willingness to do what is needed to keep his people strong and weed out any bad eggs.

The Council

Wavecaller Lira Head of Trade

Tideweaver Coral Head of Environment and Health

Deepguard Murk  Head of Defense and Security

Pearlmaster Shale Head of Education and Agriculture

Lira grew up in a family who were well known tradesmen, and had already earned the benefit of being well experienced in the way transactions worked in the kingdom, with her earning deals that most people doubted to ever be possible. Coral is the most passively behaved on the council, with her spending more time working hands on with the environment than anything else, but after she took to healing people where she could, support for her skyrocketed. Most see Murk similar to an overprotective family member, which some people find indeering while others feel like it too much, but supporters outweigh the nosayers. Initally, Shale's membership to the council was the most unexpected, with him having always been a person who preferred working hands on instead of directing others, but he quickly proved that he was able to do both, bringing for much growth for the people of the kingdom.

Economy

Neptaron’s main exports are understandably seafoods, pearls, underwater plants, and crafts made from underwater materials. They almost always have free reign over the waters around their kingdom and, thanks to their people's willingness to travel far for what they need, tend to not struggle much even when a resource is diminished to a point they must wait for regrowth, with even their balance with sea life around helping benefit them. They rarely have to import things due to being mostly self-sustainable, though due to limited resources above water, they do have to rely on other countries for lumber and a few other supplies. Most of the food that their people eat is meat, due to the substantial amount of fish and underwater creatures that are available to be hunted, though they have also managed to develop means of growing underwater plants for harvesting, and adapting some crops to grow in their more marshy lands of their above water territory. Their most profitable season tends to be the very end of warm seasons, when trade and fishing is good. There is only one individual who could be considered particularly wealthy, with there being a clear division in what he has and the middle class, and then an even sharper drop between them and the lower class, many in which become soldiers for the benefits that are offered for them.

Cities

Waveholm

A city that has two main portions, the above-water and below-water villages, though they are both circled by a thick wall made of bones. The underwater portion offers no way for those who rely on air to safely get it, with the people purposefully going out of their way to destroy any attempts to make one  avoid any unwanted visitors. The upper city is well-warded as if prepared to be attacked at any time, with soldiers constantly coming add going from the barracks within it. The most important structure, the castle, is in the underwater portion of the city, surrounded by grand and elegantly made buildings that make up their underwater people's homes.

Poseril (Destroyed in 175)

A once fully submerged town that thrived with plant life and underwater farms, destroyed after suspicious water patterns. The structures were said to have been even more grand than Waveholm’s, but all accounts of their appearances vary.
